Get your bearings on Oral Cancer Screening
Early Detection Saves Lives
Oral cancer screenings are a quick, painless part of your routine dental visit. We carefully check your mouth, tongue, gums, and throat for early signs of cancer or precancerous changes. When detected early, oral cancer has a much higher chance of successful treatment.
Our goal is to protect not just your smile, but your overall health.

All About Dental Cleaning
What to expect during your screening?
Your dentist will visually examine your lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, and throat for any unusual spots, sores, or discoloration. We’ll gently feel the tissues of your mouth and neck to check for lumps or irregularities.
The screening is quick, comfortable, and usually completed in just a few minutes.
Why oral cancer screenings matter?
Oral cancer can develop without pain or obvious symptoms in its early stages. Regular screenings help us detect issues early—when treatment is most effective and outcomes are far better.
How often should you get oral cancer screening?
Most patients receive an oral cancer screening every six months during their routine exam. If you have higher risk factors—such as tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, or HPV—you may benefit from more frequent checks.
Signs you may need to see us sooner
Call us right away if you notice:
- Sores in the mouth that don’t heal within two weeks
- Lumps or thickened areas in the mouth or neck
- Red or white patches on the tongue, gums, or cheeks
- Persistent sore throat or hoarseness
- Unexplained numbness in the lips or tongue
Techology that improves your exam
We use advanced lighting and magnification to enhance visibility and detect subtle tissue changes. In some cases, special oral screening lights can highlight abnormalities not visible to the naked eye.

Got Any Questions?
Do I really need a cleaning every six months?
Yes. Even with great home care, plaque and tartar can build up in hard-to-reach places, leading to decay or gum disease.
Will my insurance cover routine dental visits?
Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive visits per year, but we’ll review your benefits before treatment.
Are dental x-rays safe?
Yes. We use low-radiation digital x-rays that are considered safe for patients of all ages.
Can routine exams detect more than cavities?
Absolutely — we check for gum disease, oral cancer, bite issues, and signs of wear or clenching.
How long does a dental exam take?
Most routine visits take about 45–60 minutes, including your cleaning.
